Obedient Dog = Good Owner – Reward Good Behaviour to Stop Bad

Thought today would be a day for advice on the Blog.

Now I see and watch lots of dogs and owners while out walking Oscar, and the common factor both in the dog world and human world is:- Poor Owner/Parent = Poor Dog/Child

Conversely:- Good Owner/Parent = Good Dog/Child

One of the issues is that owners or parents often don’t realise is that the issue is them, when trying to teach their dog/child good from bad.

In the dog world, often the issue may be I wish my dog wouldn’t jump up, or his recall is bad, or he barks a lot.

The focus is often purely on the bad behaviour.

What owners forget to do is praise the good behaviour, and if you do, then the bad behaviour will reduce or disappear.

So how do we do this, well we need to establish what the good behaviour is that we are seeking rather than just identifying the bad stuff.

Three common issues:- Poor Recall, Jumping Up, Barking.

So, what do we want to replace these with:- Come to You, Sit, No Barking.

It’s not just about stopping the bad, but encouraging the good, which is often overlooked.

For Jumping, the command could be Off and then Sit.

Once the dog does the good, then praise with soft sounding ‘Good Boy’ and reward with treat.

The need then is to keep rewarding the good by using the 3 R’s:- Reward, Repeat, Reinforce.

If you keep this up, and always look to praise your dog for the good, he will soon get it and your relationship will grow together.

Result, Happy Dog and Happy Owner.
