FIFA World Cup 2026 – Here We Go Again
High Hopes, but as always, low expectations.
Here we go again, another World Cup. My sixteenth – that I recall – and 60 years since my first when England won the competition and instilled my expectations.
However, since then all they have done is raise my hopes, only to dash them.
With the announcement of the TTs England Squad, it is time for me to consider the next major football tournament.
As always, a lot of media hype and expectation from the England supporters and pundits.
However, having supported England for all those years, I have learnt not to get my hopes up at any major tournament, and this one I suspect will be no different.
I look forward to this as much as any other and go forward with High Hopes, but as always, low expectations.
Albeit with it being played in the USA, Mexico and Canada, I’m not sure I will watch that many games because of the time difference. The extended tournament to 48 teams will be interesting and I hope proves to be a success, but I again remain sceptical. Is it just FIFA just seeking to make more money?
I have to say; I look at the squad and perhaps it’s just me, but I am not convinced we have the killer edge to do more than England normally does.
Defensively, I am also unsure that we can stop the better teams that we are likely to meet, and we appear to be highly dependent upon HK scoring for us to progress. I hope the team plays with an urgency and commitment that we expect, but rarely see. The heat in the USA may not suit our players or that style.
But maybe I’m wrong and being overly pessimistic. Time will tell.
I do hope TT is smarter with his subs and use of the squad, something that GS lacked.
My prediction at best is the QF.
My hope and desire, as with every major competition I have watched, is that we will be worthy winners.
Ah, I feel a dream coming on. Football’s coming home?… Well, maybe.
