Grandad Col – A Journal – Despair to Recovery – A Celebration of the NHS Harrogate Hospital Staff – Part 2
4 Weeks in the NHS Harrogate Bolton Ward
This is the second blog about my 4 week stay in the NHS, following being rushed to hospital with a ruptured appendix, and the subsequent two life-changing operations. It is a journal of my deepest despair to the road to recovery. Blogs 1 to 7 are included in Part 1.
But it is more than that. It is a celebration of the brilliant and wonderful staff of Harrogate District Hospital, and in particular Bolton Ward.
The staff of the NHS are magnificent, working12 hour shifts, looking after the patients so admirably. They are the NHS, and without them it would be nowhere. However, the NHS system is broken and is in need of reform. Everyone who works there knows this. From the porters, to the consultants, to the managers.
These blogs contain my rants when under the influence of morphine, to the more controlled reflections post-operation, and recovery. I hope you will view them and perhaps pass them on to your friends on social media.
The blogs are not chronological, but the rantings of a one-hour video at 2.30 am one morning, when I couldn’t sleep, interspersed with more coherent observations as I recover. I hope you will persevere, but understand if you don’t.
Included are my latest feelings as I return to the ‘Old Grandad Col’ whether that is for the better, I’m not sure. I guess as long as it encompasses the better side of my character, it will be fine.
