Ukraine War – Three Years On

Is there hope on the horizon?
When Russia invaded Ukraine 3 years ago, like many, I was unsure what the outcome would be.
Over the last years, I have had time to reflect, like so many others, including those in the Media Outlets.
If you have seen my annual blogs on this conflict, you will note that things had remained much the same and until very recently had been reported rather differently by the media than when the original conflict began.
Earlier this month, I again wondered how the media would portray another year of conflict and tragic loss. Somehow, I expected it to be like last year, it’s prominence in the headlines being less than before, albeit for those directly involved, the results no less tragic.
Time has a strange effect on people’s perception, and if the media chooses to downplay matters, then events often fall from our consciousness. Things were again looking to be much the same this year.
That was until DT made a phone call to VP, and suddenly things are so different.
Previously, the Western nations, including NATO, and more importantly the USA Republican politicians, were less inclined to maintain the previous strong support for Ukraine, albeit the USA Democrats and European politicians seem to still show a united front. But were they like others, just hoping things would go away?
Now things are different, and the media is running around like scolded cats, looking to report their take on DT and his deputies take on recent events.
Everyone now appears to have something to say or discuss. Looking to become sage correspondents on one of the most difficult of conflicts to resolve.
Perhaps DT can orchestrate some sort of truce, but with so much death and heartache, will VZ and VP be able to find a peace solution?
Will USA and Russia come to a deal without Ukraine involvement? Unlikely, but they are the significant players in this game.
Will VZ be forced from power as a tragic consequence of any proposed solution?
With peace, there would be elections, and history shows that strong war leaders are often blamed for the conflict and not re-elected. Would that be another victory for VP?
I’m not sure whether peace can be secured, but I hope there can be a solution, albeit whatever it is, neither side will be pleased with the outcome.
Such is the deep hatred between Ukraine and Russia.
Ukraine will undoubtably lose territory – a consequence of peace -and no doubt VP will therefore be rewarded for his aggression. I therefore just wonder how this period of European history will finally be portrayed.
The events of 7 October 2023, and Israel’s response – until recently – attracted greater media coverage than the ongoing war in Ukraine, despite Ukraine’s struggle for freedom being no different from then to now.
It’s strange that what occurred on 25 February 2022 and was perceived as the greatest threat to world peace at the time, no longer appeared to merit the same media coverage, well not until DT became president again.
When will the war end? That I don’t know.
Based upon how long there has been a conflict in eastern Ukraine, it could still be many, many, years.
Is there a quick solution? Maybe. Maybe not. VP is a difficult man to negotiate with.
Compromises will be required if a quick solution is to be brokered. The issue remains is there a willingness on Russia and Ukraine to compromise. Time alone will tell.
Unless, of course, DT can pull a rabbit out of the hat.
But if there is a truce, the peace will need to be policed. I mean you wouldn’t trust VP to honour any agreement.
So, it looks like the UK will have to at least put some boys on the ground if a deal is struck.
More expenditure for the UK taxpayer to pay. But perhaps a small justifiable cost if peace is truly secured.
So how will the anniversary be reported? I will let you judge, but I somehow guess it will now be differently to last year but still not as earnestly as earlier years.
My message remains pretty much the same.
I for one, cannot start to understand the pain of the Ukrainians and to some lesser extent the Russians that are directly involved.
I had considered writing my own thoughts on the terrible atrocities that have occurred because of VP’s unleashed evil, but instead I again have decided to purely note a couple of worthy quotes, which in my opinion sum things up rather succinctly.
“Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it” (GS)
“The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing” (EB)
These quotes remain as accurate today as they did last year, and also ring true, for the continued media coverage in Gaza and the ongoing fragile ceasefire in the Middle East.
