Nero’s parting is so Sad

R.I.P Nero – I hope you enjoyed your time

Today has marked Nero’s departure from this world.

She like Speckle and Snowy, had a good life, having free rein of our garden, but clearly her time had come.

Like with all of them, SEM has shed a few tears at the passing, but not so much for me, perhaps it was because it was a natural death, and there was a certain inevitability about it.

She has joined her pals in the big hen house in the sky.

It’s been nearly 6 years since we rather foolishly perhaps, decided to keep chickens in our back garden, and they at least initially paid their way and have been good pets. They produced lots of eggs, far more than SEM and I could eat.

So I used to sell them at work to my loyal customers. They loved the deep yellow yokes the girls produced, especially the blue eggshells that Snowy provided, they were always the most popular.

Time, however, waits for no man, or chicken, and it has been a long while since we had any eggs from the chook’s and so they had become pure pets, no longer paying their way.

They have however, all provided us with some fun moments over the years, providing great eggs that produced plenty of omelettes and great Yorkshire Puddings. Nero though, had now been on her own for the last ten months clucking away merrily, with just the squirrels stealing her food, but she had slowly become an old lady, and the end was always bound to happen, just a matter of time. A bit like all of us.

The garden won’t be the same without Nero, she has always been the noisiest of them all, and could be a pain in the arse when it got light so early in the summer mornings, luckily though, the neighbours have never complained.

Thank you Nero, I hope you enjoyed your time, just like we did.

I’m sorry to hear of your loss of Nero. It’s not nice to lose any pet.

I’m glad you can look back and remember the times when all 3 chooks were together and having a full egg rack in the kitchen was a thing of beauty.

You gave them all a lovely home that was safe and secure. They enjoyed wandering around your garden and teasing the dogs squirrels and neighbouring animals no doubt. Summer mornings will be quieter I guess but you gave them all a good life.

    Rest in peace chooks.

    Helen. X
