When did Fish & Chips become Expensive – On Holiday in Cornwall

Having been an adopted Yorkshireman for now over 35 years, I don’t need much encouragement to be somewhat spendthrift. Some already knew I was penny wise, but I guess when money is hard fought for then I feel it is inevitable.

I have also, never been a great one for over indulging on fast food, but notwithstanding that, I do like the odd Chinese Take-Away or a Pizza or occasionally some Fish and Chips, even more so when on holiday.

Therefore, when SEM and I rocked up on holiday in Cornwall yesterday for a long over due trip to a place we both really love, we thought nothing of doing what we normally do after a long  6-hour drive, but to get some fish and chips for tea.

So you can imagine my shock, when I was asked for £32, for what was always classed as a relatively cheap meal. Initially I thought I had ordered three portions, but no the young lad behind the counter assured me no, that it was correct and asked if I fancied some fresh fried asparagus as they had one portion left. I decided to pass on that, being not quite sure whether my wallet, or my pallet would take the strain.

Well, having taking a quick look at the menu on the wall, I suddenly realised that it was definitely correct, with fish at £10 a go, and a battered sausage at £4.50p. I looked around, to check if the other punters were similarly shocked, but they were all on their phones waiting for their orders to be cooked to order.

I guess this was the only upside to the transaction, and I suppose the fact that they did taste okay, not the best we have eaten, but not bad for over thirty quid.

There we have it then, back home, in Wetherby,  Fish and Chips are still at the going rate for a Take-A-Way, of about £8.50p a head, but in the more up market Cornwall coastal haunts it now costs £15 a shot, and no bloody seat or waitress service either, plus a sausage at nearly a fiver.

What has the world come too!
