Trial by Media – Again
Surely events of 20 years ago can’t be raised retrospectively
It’s only a short while since I last wrote about innocent until proven guilty, and my loathing of Trial by the Media and Social Media, but the RB saga has hit the headlines, resulting in his tour being postponed by the promoters.
Now the recent clear episode of LR infamous kiss was witnessed on worldwide TV at the Women’s FIFA World Cup, but RB’s escapades were infamous twenty years ago. That was surely the time for investigating. Not now when recollections will be affected by time.
I find it strange that apparent victims prefer to raise the issue with newspapers and tv channels – possibly for financial gain and notoriety – rather than through the correct legal channels.
I am not great fan of RB, and it was evident twenty years ago what he was like, and I am sure those that now seek some form of redress, also knew of his reputation, for drug taking and promiscuity at the time. That was possibly why they were involved with him.
Now I am not saying that excuses anyone for unlawful actions, and certainly not RB behaviour, but come on, speak up at the time of the allegation. If not, forever hold your peace.
I do believe there should be a statue of limitations. Ten years is I believe reasonable.
Let’s be clear none of us can honestly truly remember what happened accurately 10 weeks, 10 months and definitely not 10 years ago. If you say you can then, I am sorry, I don’t believe you.
I struggle now, to remember accurately things I did only 10 days ago.
Don’t get me wrong, unlawful acts need to be punished, and victims need all the support they can get, but not for events of twenty years ago.
That is not reasonable, well not in my world or I believe the majority of us.
The media though, will run with this for awhile like most events though it will run out of steam. I look back only a few weeks to the BBC’s HE saga. Where is that going, but maybe it only get’s closure when the police say they have looked, and there is nothing to prosecute.
Innocent until proven guilty, but apparently not when the media are involved, or it suits their own purposes.
RB is on the front pages of the newspapers today. Despite his autobiography where he admits he enjoyed drug taking and having sex with random people, only now do we hear that women have made statements he has raped them or sexually attacked them. Why now?
One women was 16 at the time. She was taken out of school to go to his house and once there RB was sexually active with this woman. She’s now 33. A few questions arise from this,
1) Her parents should have been told she was leaving the school, so we’re they aware of where their 16 year daughter was going?
2) Did her parents know she was spending time with RB, a telly personality with a reputation.
3) Being 16 she was old enough to consent to sex but was she neurotypically capable or did she have special needs, and would therefore potentially more vulnerable and maybe unable to make her thoughts known.
4) Was she blinded by RB being a celebrity.
5) Would you want to tell your parents at 16 years old that you are having oral sex and sex with a man who is in his early 30’s.
6) People could argue that as she was 16 and at the age of consent, RB has not broken any rules, however how can he prove it was consensual.
This lady may have been disgusted by her younger actions or she realised she was one of his many girls. Maybe shame or embarrassment has kept her quiet. Maybe now she finally feels she can get some closure to this. Maybe she’s been scared to say anything for fear of not being believed.
Maybe she’s yet another money grabbing woman who’s had sex with a celebrity and who now wants to tell the world. Does she want to wreck RB’s marriage and family life. Is she trying to ruin him?
Sometimes celebs thunk they can do anything they like. Some get away with it, some don’t. Some don’t get uncovered for years. Too many people at the BBC are bent. We can only watch this one unfold.
Blimey, your comment is as long as my blog. Valid points as usual.
Will see how this one runs.
As is often the case, as many for him as against him.
Looks like the Jury’s out, except for the Media, who have already reached a conclusion.
