Time For Change? – History says it is.

It’s Labour’s Turn?

Well, with a week to go to the General Election, I thought I ought to put my tuppence worth out there.

It is evident that the Great British public are seeking change, in some form or other.

It is not surprising really the conservatives have been in government since 2010, and history shows that after fourteen years, no matter who is in power, a new generation of voters want someone to blame and to seek an alternative to their current situation.

I have seen politics change in my near seventy years and what goes around comes around.

It is now once again, Labour’s turn

I checked things out, just to make sure I was correct, and I was not wrong.

1951-64      13 Years Conservative (WC, AE, HMc & ADH)

1964-70        6 Years Labour            (HW)

1970-74        4 Years Conservative (EH)

1974-79        5 Years Labour            (HW & JC)

1979-97      18 Years Conservative (MT & JM)

1997-2010  13 Years Labour            (TB & GB)

2010-24       14 Years Conservative (DC, TM, BJ, LT & RS)

Despite the recent world events affecting the economy; Covid, Putin Invasion, and Worldwide Recession, the public has decided the conservatives are to blame. So out you go.

It wouldn’t have made a great deal of difference either way. Time dictates that it’s Labour’s go at messing things up.

I have to admit whoever is in power – as long as it wasn’t the loony left under JC, which would never happen – then I can assure you, life goes on, regardless. I have seen Socialist governments and Tory governments, and no matter what, we are taxed and see our services often decline.

And despite it all, we get on with life.

The difference between the party’s policies are now as close as when TB came to power. This is because that is what the British public wants. Middle of the Road politics. No extremes of left or right.

My wife, SEM and I have totally different political opinions, but that is possibly why we get on. We don’t talk about politics, because we both know where we stand.

I asked her the other day, ‘Had it made any difference to her who was in government?’

I wasn’t surprised by her answer.

‘It hasn’t made any difference to my life whatsoever. They are all in it for themselves. Life goes on, despite them.’

I have to admit I agree with her. I was concerned when TB came to power, but to be honest, while I did not agree with his politics, and do not like him as a person he was a good PM. I similarly agreed with MT politics, but disliked her as a person, again, but she was a strong PM.

SKS is in the right place at the right time, and being as nondescript as possible, seeking to not offend anyone. RS is similarly in the wrong place at the wrong time. Everything isn’t all his fault, and he is probably not too bad a person. I’m sure his wife and kids like him.

So, while I still hope for a Tory government, that won’t happen. However, what isn’t good for the country is a Labour government with a very large majority. Opposition politics are required for the checks and balances, but notwithstanding what happens on 4th July, Labour will be in power for 5 years, possibly ten, and at worst fifteen years.

Life will go on, leaving everyone with an even higher tax burden, no matter what.

All I can hope is that I live to see another conservative government, not particularly because of their politics – albeit I agree with them – but because I just want to live a bit longer.

I will give my take on the GE result once the pundits are proven right or wrong.
