Snowy’s parting is so Sad

Tuesday marked Snowy’s departure from this world.

She like Speckle, had a good life, having free rein of our garden, but clearly her time had come and having been poorly for a few days we decided that it was time to put her to sleep. Making calls for animals not matter what they are is always a tough ask.

We are now left with just Nero, who at present, is not particularly shedding any tears for her departed friend. Not like Sharon who quite rightly, felt sad that one of our pet chickens had gone to the big hen house in the sky.

I must admit that when I was finally talking to the vet, even I was rather emotional, and I felt my voice faltering slightly. I guess I’m just a big softy at heart too.

Well it’s been 5 years since we rather foolishly perhaps, decided to keep chickens in our back garden, but they at least initially paid their way and have been good pets. They produced lots of eggs, far more than SEM and I could eat.

So I sold them at work to my loyal customers. They loved the deep yellow yokes the girls produced, especially the blue eggshells that Snowy provided, they were always the most popular.

Time, however, waits for no man, and despite Speckles departure 2 years ago, which didn’t initially stop the Chick’s producing, over the last 6 to 8 months they had stopped laying eggs completely, so they had become pure pets and no longer paying their way, but hey ho, them’s the breaks.

They have all provided us with some fun moments over the years, and plenty of omelettes and great Yorkshire Puddings, and now Nero is left clucking away on her own.

I’m not sure how long she will keep going, but chicken’s can apparently live to ten years, albeit I’m not sure she will get there, but we will see.

She now has a pretty large area to while away he days, the potentially more significant issue is she has always been the noisiest of them all and she can be a pain in the arse when it gets light so early in the summer mornings, luckily the neighbours have never complained.

Well not yet……
