“Just Stop Oil” – Here we go again….
Now my generation more than any has “f**ked up the world” good style, it has wanted all the benefits but taken none of the responsibility for its actions, so we are where we are, up the creek without a paddle.
The world will, unless we all take urgent responsibility become inhabitable to humans, the earth will continue but sustainable life won’t…. well not for millions/billions of years when possibly new life may evolve again on the blue planet.
The outlook for our children and children’s children is, not to put too finer point on it, catastrophic.
The issue I do have, however is that as I have stated before, a few well-meaning objectors of “Just Stop Oil” are not aiding their cause by alienating a huge amount of the populous by disrupting the M25 and other significant arteries around London. They will however either end up in court or with a bloody nose from some desperate mother seeking to take her sick child to hospital but is delayed in tragic circumstances.
Now does the means justify the end, depends on who has the loudest voice currently in the media and what slant the main stream media want to make its story.
“Unheard climate activists” or “Mother and child, victim of radical activists” or “M25 closed with huge disruption”.
Let’s be clear these few protestors are unlikely to influence a government that already understands the issues, but similarly if the conservatives want to win a General Election, it needs to pamper to the millions that want to be warm this and every winter and who also want to get around the country.
Changing Putin’s mind would be more worthwhile, but the activists haven’t got the balls for that so they climb some gantries to try to make a futile point.
At COP26 last year there was a good focus on issues, since then the UK has a European War on its doorstep. Luckily the politicians recognise at COP27 the need to solve climate issues and somehow give Putin an exit strategy he has been unable to come up with on his own.
The climate issues are universal and if the big players don’t come to the party, “Just Stop Oil” protestors are p**sing in the proverbial wind, while also alienating the ones they should be uniting in a way that would realistically make the world sit up and take notice.
I don’t know the answer and can’t currently advise on a sensible cause of action, which for me is most unusual.
However, I do know, small, minded measures and token gestures, like those being undertake are of no significant benefit, other than making a few individuals feel they are making a stand in an everchanging world, while annoying everyone else in the process, but really……… grow up and smell the coffee, that’s being planted in the rapidly depleted rain forest of the world.
Not really sure of your opinion on this, so I’ll be arrogant and assume you are searching for an answer, and offer it…….
Capitalism requires growth of GDP to function of even survive, in turn GDP growth requires a growing population for governments to borrow against , that requires energy, food, housing and Many many more resources. With this in mind acknowledging that greed from the ruling classes will always trump the needs of the masses the future is still fossil fuel until a very brave and selfless person of power makes the monumental leap of faith into renewables, suffers the initial cost and no doubt mocking in order to make the world a better place ( and obviously masses of money) the question for me is simple, as Brits, how long will we let ourselves be represented or rather misrepresented by the Oxbridge elite with no other agenda than growing there own personal wealth at the cost of the very people they are paid to serve?
So for me , protest away, cause this disruption but have the correct agenda and objectives and remember it’s evil for personal greed to cause pain, suffering and even death to others (look at Putin) and it only takes for men to do nothing for evil to prosper.
Who will be the philanthropist that steps up to save the word?????
