Death Penalty Outcry – 60% of World lives in Countries with Death Penalty
The Left-Wing Media got it’s knickers in a twist yesterday as LA was appointed Tory Deputy Chairman and had previously stated he supported the Death Penalty (DP).
He was vitriolically attacked by left wing twitter users, mainly because this former Labour supporter was now a conservative and the Deputy Chairman at that.
Now I am unsure why this is such a shock, as about 50% of the UK population would welcome its return for certain crimes.
Also 60% of the worlds populations lives in countries that still have the Death Penalty.
Of the 195 counties in the world, 109 have abolished the Death Penalty, but that leaves 86 that hasn’t.
Now I am unsure where that leaves all the haters of this policy, as we now get into racists areas if we are to say that those countries still using it are wrong.
These include China, India, USA, Singapore, Indonesia, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nigeria, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Japan, Iran, Taiwan.
Personally, I am not against having The Death Penalty. In my mind it is more a deterrent rather than a go to use of punishment for murder.
However, there are instances where I believe the punishment should be appropriate for the committed crime.
Mass murders, especially of children and terrorist acts with multiple deaths are a clear case in my opinion. Also, very deliberate and clear-cut murders.
I recognise individual crimes of passion are unlikely to be a clear enough case and therefore the use of the Death Penalty even for these types of crimes is unreasonable.
So why have it? The converse of this is why not?
I guess the possible half way house measure for me has been, if you take a life then the prison sentence should be LIFE. If you steal a life; your punishment should mean you lose the right to freedom.
This would at least get past the liberal of us that believe there is a repentant sinner in everyone.
I am not so sure.
Now the issue is that LA is entitled to his opinion, that is only fair and reasonable. If you disagree you are also entitled to your view, but to get so wound up about a subject that 60% of the world accepts seems rather, over the top.
Let’s be clear about this the Death Penalty is not going to be reinstated in the UK, no way, there is no political appetite for it. Even though occasionally it may be debated, so don’t expect the Death Penalty to be back on the Statue Book.
Let’s be honest, if we can’t even agree on assisted suicide there is certainly no way back for the Death Penalty.
