Christmas Message – Free Speech with Tolerance

I thought that like the new King I would pen my first Christmas Message, especially as I have been reading more of what others have been saying to provide my topics.

As all my blogs promote freedom of speech, I thought I would focus on this, but as has been identified in the media only recently, with free expression comes a responsibility.

Unfortunately it is evident that many people wish to voice their opinions but without really considering the implications.

It is abundantly clear that many just say the first thing that comes to mind and worry about the true impact later or not at all.

I made the conscious decision that the blog would always be written when able to review and check what is written, being mindful of once said it can’t be retracted, despite some thinking deleting a Twitter message after its been read and re-tweeted will undo the hurt caused.

The adage ‘if you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all’ is a good starting point.

I also advocate that ‘if you say something, make sure it’s worthwhile saying’ this means that when you do say something people appreciate it and know that you often say meaningful things.

I find that the other saying ‘empty vessels make the most noise’ is very appropriate for the vast majority on Twitter and on social media.

I also note that most people are really only concerned about what they have to say or blindly agree with others that share their opinions, without really taking time to consider matters.

Wouldn’t it be so much better if everyone respected others perspective, it doesn’t mean you have to agree with it but at least acknowledge there are always two sides to every coin and case.

So my message is, please feel free to express your opinion, but be mindful of the effect this may have on others, especially if your view becomes personal.

My quote of last week is very relevant ‘…small minds discuss people.’

Surely if you have something to say, try to be positive, many opinions appear to focus on negative and hateful aspects, it’s not worthy of anyone and is unnecessary, no one wants to be ridiculed and it’s not necessary.

That doesn’t mean that those with strong opinions shouldn’t be challenged, that is most important, especially if those views are clearly wrong or hateful, but it needs to be done in a calm and collected manner.

So as always, please feel free to express yourself, but please be more tolerant and understanding of others.

Merry Christmas and A Happy New Year, no matter what your religion, belief  or persuasion…
