Abortion – The right to live or let die!

The upcoming USA mid-term elections has raised again the issue of abortion in a country with quite liberal approaches to some subjects and extreme conservative views on others.

It seems odd to me that in some US states the same pro-lifers against abortion for any reason, often argue the right to bear arms, but surely the only reason to use a gun is to kill someone or something, I struggle at times to square that circle.

Some in the USA and the world for that matter are of the opinion that a woman or underage girl who has been raped or made pregnant by an abusive father or over powering brother has no right to an abortion. Similarly, a woman has no choice on what she does with her body even when realising that her circumstances mean that she is unable to financially or emotionally bring up a child and that she and the child are potentially destined to a life of utter misery.

How can this be seen as reasonable in the 21st Century.

Women have been oppressed for centuries, only as recent as the 20th Century did, they get the vote and decades later equal opportunities with men

You know my views, Lawful Freedom of Speech and Freedom of Choice…… for all

Now anyone that believes all life is sacrosanct no matter what the circumstances can chose that way of life themselves and follow their beliefs accordingly, but please I beg you, do not seek to enforce your view on others, that is the reason that most wars and conflicts have occurred.

Let’s consider the facts, the earliest a baby has been born and survived is 21 weeks and 5 days and that is with the aid of modern science, a reason 20 weeks has been chosen in the UK to limit the date for an abortion, earlier in other countries.

A legal cut off is required and that is always necessary.

I would however suggest if an abortion were the final outcome chosen it should be undertaken as soon as possible after conception.

Let’s be clear until life can be sustained in the real world, there is no life in terms of a baby or child to consider. Until 20 weeks we have initially an embryo then a foetus, it is not a baby, and that is how I chose to consider things, there are others I am sure who believe otherwise.

My view to many may seem harsh but if we consider it this way, then in the unfortunate occurrence of a miscarriage or still born, any prospective parents can potentially cope with the circumstances by being aware of the risks. Unfortunately, there is no given right that you will have a perfect child or one that survives, as many of us know by experience.

I therefore feel quite strongly that a woman should have the right to choose whether to terminate a pregnancy.

I am convinced that every woman in the circumstances where she is even contemplating such a drastic action will be going through turmoil, but it is her call and should be her call alone and should be supported by everyone no matter what her decision.

It’s not for some religious conservative minded man with a revolver and rifle or a priest with no perception of the consequences, or for that matter a woman who has healthy children in a wonderful family environment, or the man who was party to the conception; no he is not the father, that only comes later; or a politician seeking votes, they are all unlikely to ever have had to consider the panic/fear the prospective mother is considering, but they still blindly wish to impose their belief on her and others like her.

Those prospective USA voters and everyone else, please feel free to adopt your beliefs, that is only right and proper, but on this subject and all others we should allow everyone to have the freedom of choice.
