David Walliams – Fair Target or Over Reaction
The Guardian and Metro not for the first time seek to create a headline from old events.
Let’s take a shot at DW following the leaking of a transcript of what on the face of it appears to be a private joke/conversation.
Now to be honest I am no fan of the ‘comedian’ and children’s author, his humour and manner are not my cup of tea. However, to attempt to disrespect someone and harm their career trawling up something that happened a couple of years ago seems unfair but becoming more acceptable in today’s warped sense of morality. Surprisingly PM also appears to be stoking this fire as it would appear he has an old axe to grind.
The comments, not for the first time are potentially being taken out of the strict context they were delivered.
I have also yet to hear from the two alleged recipients of DW crass attempt at barrack room humour.
Now if you have decided to enter the lion’s den of reality TV, you are, I assume aware of the upside and downside of this venture, with every Ying there is a potential Yang.
I am sure if the two ‘contestants’ were any good they would most likely have already had a back story that the press would have latched upon following a long run-on TV.
The fact that they have not become Saturday Night wonders, leads me to think they were at best mediocre, now that in its self is no reason to ridicule them, but similarly a reason not to.
I would like to think that the two of them don’t need sanctimonious reporters trying to defend their honour and at least one of them would have quite liked the idea of DW ridiculing them, especially after he had apparently taken some early cheap shots of his own.
The comments regarding the woman apparently are ‘crude sexual insults’ according to the Metro, really I think they were at worst crude sexual jokes that any woman with an ounce of brain, and for that matter reporter, would accept in the spirit delivered and laugh at accordingly.
So where are we an this matter, potentially if the ITV’s recent record is to go by, DW can say bye to his nice little earner alongside SC, but it will be interesting if he is supported as AMcP was for his indiscretions, which would have ended any other less successful entertainer.
I know they are different, but knee jerk reactions to events rarely provide a reasonable or fair judgement an unnecessarily hyped-up stories generated by the media without true consideration to the facts or circumstances.
Media employees appear to be under extreme pressure to find the headline or click rate on social media but is the sensationalised frontpage really justified.
DW’s crawling apology, he will no doubt feel is the least he can do to save his career on BGT, but realistically, back in the day someone of his standing would have laughed it off and toughed it out for the minor issue it is.
Whether DW career survives or falls I am completely indifferent to, like I guess are the majority of people, what I do know is that many Mums and Grand Mothers are likely to still buy the books that the they have enjoyed reading to children worldwide.
Was the reporter’s story, leaked by someone feeling it was in the ‘public interest’ really merit the headline when there are so many more worthy issues that needs serious consideration and debate.
