AI – Good or Bad – Should we be Worried?

Now I am not sure where you are with the use and development of Artificial Intelligence (AI), but it is in the news more often than it used to be.

The latest views appear to range from the best thing since sliced bread to the end of humanity.

I guess it is likely to be somewhere between these extremes.

AI has the means of developing things quicker than humans could ever do and more consistently and accurately.

There have already been huge advances in medicine and there are many positives in dealing with diseases etc.

The ability to undertake things quicker and more efficiently are also seen by business as a positive as it means advances in industry by reducing overheads and improving efficiencies. However that means less jobs for Joe Public.

So while there are positives there are downsides.

Also the monitoring of the AI industry is sadly lacking and there are now concerns that things may get out of hand and AI could take over things, especially if developed by unscrupulous individuals.

Now unfortunately there are, and always will be the ruthless and selfish and AI in their un-checked hands could prove catastrophic.

Could it launch Nuclear Weapons or develop incurable viruses that would threaten humans?

Now would this result in the end of humanity? Possibly, but I am not sure.

I am however convinced it could change things dramatically, and if not managed in the right way could result in significant problems. Is Armageddon likely, possible but would it mean the end of humanity? Maybe as we know it but possibly a new dawn would evolve from whatever ensued.

The advances in the world have occurred exponentially and changes are occurring so rapidly that at times it is often difficult to keep up with the modern developments. But are the changes all good, I somehow doubt it.

I look back at the advances in my lifetime, and I am unsure if today’s youth could manage without their modern devices and modern conveniences of today.

I do feel at times their lives would be better if we stepped back a bit.

So is AI, good or bad. I am not convinced either way.

If it can be managed purely for good, then realistically it will be to humanities benefit, but mistakes at this early stage of developing AI may prove catastrophic and be unreversible.

Time I think for the Worldwide Legislators to get involved, but I am not sure they are clever or smart enough to come up with the leading our way in this new world…..
